Vegan search trends

I realize that this isn’t a post about food, and that Veganmofo 2009 is all about the food, but I thought it was interesting and others might as well. Google has this cool feature that allows you to see how popular different searches have been over the years, and so I thought I would check out the single word “vegan“.

The graph shows the number of searches by people in the US for the word “vegan” since 2004. The cool thing that pops out immediately is that, over the years, the number of searches for “vegan” has been steadily increasing. Awesome! You can also see regular spikes in searches around Thanksgiving and Christmas, which is also very cool. Hopefully this means fewer dead turkeys and pigs as people go online to learn about meatless alternatives. Over the past few years there have been more usage of the word vegan in news articles as well, showing that people in the mainstream really are stating to think about veganism more. If you click through to the Google webpage you can see searches broken down by state and city, with Portland, Oregon the winner. Imagine that. 🙂 On Google’s site you can also take a more global look at searches. Which city in Canada wins? It’s Nanaimo, British Columbia. I would love it if someone from Nanaimo were to comment here. 🙂

Yea, I know, I’m a nerd. But this stuff is sort of cool. 🙂
